Cool Camping campsite review:

There’s always something a little magical about forests. They’re dark, dripping, mysterious places full of unseen dangers, lurking beasts, and the constant fear of getting lost. Even on the sunniest of days a dimly lit forest interior can feel like a very quiet, twilit world, where even the birds seem to keep away.

Luckily the site at La Forêt du Morvan isn’t quite in the heart of the forest and has cleared enough space for its 25 pitches to let the sunshine in and give the birds free reign to fly about and tweet.Well, not TweetTM exactly, but you get the point. The Morvan is almost half a million acres (226,000 hectares) of prime French countryside, officially made a Parc Régional in 1970, and now something of a playground for the not-so-rich and not-so-famous. Hills, lakes, and forests are the main attractions, best explored using a combination of shoes, pedals, and oars (or an outboard, if you’re lazy). Just make sure you take a map.

There are two main camping areas on the south-facing slopes of the site; one above and one below the main buildings. Below has a bit more in the way of trees and shade, while the pitches up above are more open and have slightly more expansive views down across the valley.

One handy feature is the availability, for hire, of private bathrooms, which is a great idea for families. You can keep your clobber in there and you don’t have to cart it around every time the kids need a scrub-down. It’s not cheap, but worth it if you’re here for a week.

Cool factor:
Fresh-air camping in nearly half a million acres (226,000 hectares) of prime French forest.
Who's in?:

Tents, campervans, small caravans (large ones may not get down the drive), dogs – yes.

Onsite fun:

Facilities in the old barns, with hot showers, private bathrooms, kitchen facilities. Arts and crafts, weekly campfire, kids’ disco, tractor tour, sports competitions.

Offsite fun:

Autun’s the nearest town of any significance, with a Roman amphitheatre and 12th-century Gothic cathedral and it’s also the base from which to explore the lakes of the Forêt de Planoise. Try the Base Nautique du Moulin du Vallon (00 33 3 85 86 95 80) for itineraries for sailing, pedaloes, canoes, and kayaks. Lots to do and visit (ask the owners). Nice walks from the campsite (maps provided). Campers informed daily about regional events.

Food & drink:

Best to bring your own supplies (kitchen facilities on site). Twice a week you can join the owners for a regional 3-course meal. At weekends there’s a pizza night. Order takeaway snacks, but if you want to eat out head to L’École Buissonière(00 33 3 86 30 47 21) in Millay, or Auberge de Poil (00 33 3 86 30 22 20).

The damage:

Family pitch (5 people) and tent €15–€27.50 per night, depending on season. Rented tent (sleeps 5) €30–€60. Private facilities cost €7.50 per night in high season. Discount for singles and couples.

Open:

April–October.

Getting there

The site’s halfway between Nevers and Beaune, north of Luzy, south of Villapourçon. Take D27 north or south, between Larochemillay and Le Puits. The site’s off the main road 2 miles (3 km) north of Larochemillay.

Public transport:

There are trains to Autun, but unfortunately no bus serving D27.
