Cool Camping campsite review:

Ah yes, the Four Seasons. Great Motown band. No?The hotel chain? No. TheVivaldi concertos then? No. The pizza? No, no, no. Les Quatre Saisons campsite, of course. There’s been a campsite on this classic aire naturelle site for ages, but it’s only in the last three years, since it was taken over by Andrew and Bernie Carnegie, that it’s really taken off. The new owners dug flat pitches into the sloping field and turned one of the barns into a games room and campers’ shelter for the occasional spells of inclement weather (ah, so that’s why it’s called the Four Seasons!).

And what they’ve produced is a great little getaway in the heart of the Creuse region of Limousin. It’s plonked amid rolling hills just 21⁄2 miles (4 km) east of the little town of Bourganeuf, which was supposedly founded by the Knights Templar and was one of their favourite French hang-outs, though you probably wouldn’t guess this because it didn’t feature in The Da Vinci Code.

The main camping area is fairly open and fringed with trees but with a couple of hidey-holes if you want to keep out of site of the neighbours.

Off to the side are a couple of smaller, more discrete, areas behind farm buildings for the Howard Hughes and Greta Garbos among you. But if you are happy to show your face, you could do worse than sign up for one of Bernie’s evening meals. She’s a qualified chef and when the weather’s nice will serve up a four-courser on the lawn. Just don’t ask for a quattro stagioni.

Cool factor:
Discreet, serene hideaway.
The basics:

There’s one central facilities block with 3 showers/ WCs, and 1 disabled toilet and shower. There’s also a washing machine (€4) and electricity can be made available at every pitch. Elsewhere there’s a barn with games for the kids, a fridge for campers’ use, and free wi-fi.

Who's in?:

Tents, campervans, caravans, dogs (for a fee and notified in advance) – yes. Large motorhomes – no (they get stuck on the steep drive).

Offsite fun:

The site’s on the GR4 walking trail and there are over 93 miles (150 km) of trails around the region. There’s also horse-riding, biking, and fishing and slightly further afield is the huge Lac de Vassivière; one of France’s top water-sports venues.

Food & drink:

Evening meals available on site at €20 per person for 4 courses, wine €6 a bottle. Home-made bread and croissants in the morning (order the night before). Nearest places off site are in Bourganeuf, where there are 2 small brasseries in the square opposite the church: Le Central (00 33 5 55 64 05 67) and La Mezzanine (00 33 5 55 64 31 17), which both serve standard fare.

The damage:

Adult €4 per night, child up to 6 years €2, tent, caravan €3, campervan €5, car €2, dog €2.

Open:

Officially April–September, but by arrangement you can probably stay any old time.

Getting there

From N145 between Guéret and La Souterraine take D912 for Bourganeuf. Follow D8 towards Lac de Vassivière. After 2 miles (3.5 km) turn left on to D37 and follow the road down the hill and then turn right (there’s a site sign). Carry on up the hill and the site is dead ahead, though the camping entrance is off to the left and up a steep climb.
