Cool Camping campsite review:

If ever there was a campsite destined to be on a postcard, it’s this one.The abundance of flowers, the babbling brook running along the back of a lovely old stone house, and 15 immaculately crafted pitches, some right next to the river, make the site a bit of a choccie-box delight.Admittedly it lacks slightly in facilities – there’s no pool and no communal room or café – but it does have a small kids’ playground, home-made apple juice on tap, and you can have breakfast in the house, if you like. There’s also a small library, fresh fruit and veg from local farmers on sale, and a BBQ shack available that you can set up right next to the river.

Then there are Claudine and Charles themselves; an ultra-hospitable pair who know the area well and can give you the low-down on the many local highs: biking and hiking trails, water sports on the Bouigane River, chapels, caves, and a string of picturesque rustic villages in both directions. Castillon-en-Couserans is a 20-minute drive and has regular cultural events in summer. That’s if you can wrench yourself away from all the calmness and cuteness, of course.

Cool factor:
This cute, calm site keeps it (arbo) real.
Who's in?:

Tents, campervans, caravans, dogs – yes. Groups – no.

Onsite fun:

Fifteen decent-sized pitches, all shaded; 1 tipi; washing machine; old-fashioned toilets (immaculately clean). BBQ area; kids’ playground. No campfires.

Offsite fun:

Hiking and horse-riding arranged from site. Galey has great views and an interesting chapel. Vallée de Bethmal is nice to visit and has a serene lake; good for picnics.

Food & drink:

Claudine is happy to cook emergency evening meals for the odd passing cyclist in distress, but you’re expected to be self-sufficient. A bio-breakfast can be prepared for €7 per person. The restaurant in Galey (00 33 5 61 96 71 52) emphasises local produce and has a simple, rustic setting. There are also local cheese and meat farms in the area – ask at reception for info.

The damage:

Tent plus 2 people €15 per night. Tipi €32 per night (2 people).

Open:

July–August.
