Cool Camping campsite review:

Here’s a place to cocoon your family in an idyllic world – just for a weekend. And it’s a kids’ (big and small) Utopia: a tempting combination of tents and food – all enclosed in a cosyVictorian walled garden.

Talton Lodge has the ultimate secret garden that you can just disappear into. When the latched wooden gate is opened you’ll be sure to gasp with excitement at the sight in front of you (it’s rather like the beginning of a theme park advert, but without the schmaltz).

The campsite is in aVictorian red-brick walled garden, with everything you’d expect – veggie patches, raspberry bushes, chicken coops, an orchard – all topped off with a babbling brook. You’ll find tipis, yurts, and a pavilion (for all your ablutions), surrounded by all the trappings of self-sufficiency, from soft fruit to hand-reared heavenly hog.

The Norwegian tipi on the lawn is massive (vast enough to hold a wedding for 65 guests). And across the gravel path you’ll find a traditionally decorated Mongolian yurt. Behind the cast-iron gates, just beyond the wall, you’ll also be able to glimpse a traditional North American tipi.

The outdoors here is paradise; kids can run in and out of trees and tents, and there are a further 20 acres surrounding this.Throw in Talton’s owner Olivia, who dishes up delicious three-course dinners – you’d be mad not to take advantage of her cooking during your stay – and you won’t be able to help feeling completely relaxed at this heavenly place.

Onsite fun:

There are 4 sleeping ‘tents’ (2 tipis and 2 yurts) in the walled garden. There’s also a barn, which easily sleeps 6, or 8 if needed. Whether you opt for a tipi or one of the hand-painted yurts, you’ll be snug as a bug; there are wood-burners in each one.The huge Norwegian tipi acts as a living and dining space, while the ‘pavilion’ houses showers, loos, and kitchen.

Offsite fun:

If you want to explore further than the woods on site, there are cycle paths galore in this beautiful part of Warwickshire. For those who feel the need to get into a car, Warwick Castle (08712 652000) has ramparts, battles... and even a gift shop.

Food & drink:

Olivia provides home-produced free-range eggs, bread, preserves, sausages, and ham, plus veg and fruit (in season). Buy one of her breakfast boxes, cook melt-in-the-mouth sausages for the kids’ tea, get them tucked up, and then ask Olivia to serve you a 3-course dinner. Plus, there are 2 good pubs in the village: the White Hart (01789 450205) and the Bird in Hand (01789 450253).

The damage:

Prices per person per night are £50 for stays at weekends and £35 on weekdays. Discounts are available for longer stays.

Open:

Open from April to October.
