We say

They say that anyone can love the mountains, but it takes a soul to love the prairie. Well, Norfolk is that prairie, with its majestically flat landscape and never-ending skies. And by the end of your stay at Wild Luxury, you’ll feel like a special soul indeed. Step into your lodge to be engulfed by the earthy scents of pine and cedar wood. From the floor, to the furniture, to the cabin bed – everything has been hobbitly hewn from natural materials. You even burn wood on your very own range. The seven lodges are completely off-grid. There’s no electricity, and all the water is stored on site – in fact, for five months of the year there’s nothing here but grass and badgers. So in many ways this is wild camping, but there’s nothing wild about having your own hot shower and flushing toilet, no siree. Dragging yourself away from your luxury lodge seems foolhardy, but it’s worth it to discover that the whole of North Norfolk is right on your doorstep. Not only are there miles of beautiful coastline to explore, but endless inland diversions involving shire horses, country piles and adventure playgrounds, too. Back at camp, kids are in their element – there are guinea pigs to cuddle, chickens to chase and making friends is a doddle. There’s plenty of space in front of the lodges for minors to mingle, and evenings spent around the communal campfire are encouraged. So, just relax on the deck of your safari lodge, glass of wine in hand and take a good long look at that breathtaking sunset in the endless expanse of Norfolk sky… It’s a bit good, isn’t it?

Location

Getting There

Pigeon Wood is located well off the main roads near Sedgeford. Precise directions are included in the welcome pack that you’ll receive on booking.

Public Transport

You really need a car here.

The Damage

Each lodge sleeps up to 6; prices range from £269 for a 2-night weekend break in low season to £895 for a week in the summer holidays. Dogs £5 each.

The Upside

Absolute low-impact luxury, with the perfect suggestion of adventure. And guinea pigs.

The Downside

The never-ending farm track is tough if you want to be to-ing and fro-ing, but then that’s what makes this place so wonderfully remote…Oh drat! What a quandary.

On Site

You can hire bikes for all ages, as well as child seats, on booking – just remember to bring your own helmets. No cars are allowed in the field, except for unpacking/packing up, so it’s incredibly safe. There are nature walks from the site, and plenty of space for kite flying and family games. Kids will love making friends with the guinea pigs and collecting eggs from the chickens. If none of those appeals, never underestimate the fun to be had in a purple wheelbarrow (you’ll find several around the site).

Off Site

We have never seen such a comprehensive welcome pack as the one you’re presented with here, so don’t worry for a moment about being stuck for things to do/see/eat/wear/watch/touch/sit on… A selection: North Norfolk is home to beautiful beaches galore – try Brancaster, Holme and Holkham just for starters. Pensthorpe nature reserve and gardens (01328 851465) hosts the BBC’s Springwatch and is home to numerous bird species and other wildlife for a day out with new feathered friends.

If it rains

Majestic Cinema in Kings Lynn (01553 772603) has 3 screens and shows the latest releases, including 3D. Splash Leisure Centre’s pool (01263 825675) in Sheringham has a giant waterslide, children’s paddling area, sun terrace and a poolside café.

Nanny State

There is no anti-scald feature on the showers, so children should be supervised.

Open

Late March–October.

Facilities

Seven luxury safari lodges are set in a fenced-off field in the middle of working farmland. Each lodge can sleep up to 6, with a double bed, bunk beds and a cute double bed in a cupboard… it’s better than it sounds, trust us. All linen and towels are rentable. There is a wood-burning range in the kitchen and your day’s allocation of firewood is supplied. There’s also a double gas hob if you can’t wait for the range to heat up before you have your morning brew. All cookware and tableware is provided, and there’s a massive coolbox for your fresh food. Indulge in local sausages and bacon from the ‘Wild Cooler’ or stock up on essentials in the treasure trove that is the honesty pantry. You can even place orders for newspapers and fresh bread the day before.

Food

It’s great fun to cook at camp, either indoors on the range, or why not have a barbecue on the campfire outside? If you want a night off, there are loads of options just a short drive away. The Rose and Crown (01485 541382) in Snettisham is a proper local pub, which serves delicious food with a local slant. For something a little upmarket, head to the award-winning Orange Tree (01485 512213) in Thornham – it’s a culinary force to be reckoned with. Don’t let the X Factor-style flames outside put you off, the service is outstanding, the food local and innovative and the children’s menu is something else!

Who's In

Families, couples, groups, single-sex parties (providing they take over all 5 lodges), dogs on leads – yes. Tents, campervans, caravans – no.
