Teversal is a Camping and Caravanning Club site that welcomes members and non-members alike. As well as acres of tent and caravan pitches, you'll find pre-pitched safari tents and a log cabin that's reminiscent of a cosy Hobbit’s home. So regardless of whether you are hot footing in a motorhome or nestling in the double beds of a cabin, you should find everything you need onsite. A well-stocked shop sells groceries, the daily newspapers and any essential camping paraphernalia that you may have forgotten. While it is dog owners who will be particularly pleased, with water bowls for use, dog bins dotted around and an outside dog (or bike) shower, it seems easier to have a pet here than in your own home!
The campsite itself has well over 100 pitches – a mixture of grassy spaces and hardstandings. There's plenty of greenery, with hedges and trees peppered around, carved up by gravel pathways that allow easy access for cars and motorhomes. The sanitary block deserves a special mention as even hard-nosed caravanners prefer the site facilities to their own cramped showers. Black marble-styled cubicles house your own private bathroom, a large wet-room with a sink, toilet, automatic power shower and space for changing. A family washroom also boasts a small bath and baby changing facilities.
Located opposite an expanse of woodland, the campsite is ideal for walking or cycling with information in the reception on good routes to follow. If you fancy taking this up a notch or two then a half hour's drive west takes you into the Peak District National Park, an inexhaustible destination for outdoor activities. Those looking for culture and history have plenty to chose from, with highlights including nearby Hardwick Hall, boasting fine Elizabethan architecture, Newstead Abbey, an 18th century restoration of the medieval original, and fascinatingly popular Chatsworth House.
The speedy links to this bounty of attractions makes Teversal Camping and Caravanning a great base for exploration. Factor in the friendly atmosphere and top facilities and there's little more you need ask for. Its easy to see, then, why the site continues its success year after year, ever adding to its camping wisdom.
Trees and greenery help shield the sound of the nearby M1 to a quiet hum, but just 2 miles from the site it helps provide rapid access to the rest of the country. Follow it north towards Chesterfield, a stop off point en route to The Peak District (01629 816200) where miles of trails meander through the idylic countryside. Here you'll also find Chatsworth House (01246 565300), recently restored to its true magnificence and home to a labyrinth of stunning galleries and state rooms. Elizabethan Hardwick Hall (01246 850430) offers similar splendour, just off the M1, while further up the motorway you'll also find Renishaw Hall (01246 432310). Bolsover Castle (08703 331181) and Newstead Abbey (01623 455900) are in the opposite direction. The campsite sits just across from Silverhill Wood Country Park and has great walking and cycling such as the Teversal Trails (01623 442021) cycleway. The National Water Sports Centre (01159 821212) offers a full range of watersports down in Nottingham, while Water Meadows Family Fun (03450 000232) provides swimming closer to the campsite. Of course, no trip to Nottinghamshire is complete without a visit to Sherwood Forest (01623 821490), the home of Robin Hood, 30 minutes away.
Local produce is available from the onsite shop and there are farmer's markets in Chesterfield and Mansfield. Gildages Farm Shop in Heath (01246 850226) is open daily for more local goods and fresh meat, while pub seekers should head to The Carnarvon Arms (01623 559676) 300m from the site.
