Cool Camping campsite review:

You can instantly tell that more than the average amounts of thought and love have gone into Bedgebury Camping. It’s the little extras: a communal tipi for campfire gatherings and general hanging-out; the cute little wooden compost toilet blocks, hand-built by owner Jim; the campfire starter packs, which include straw bales to sit on in addition to the more predictable logs, kindling, and marshmallows. Small things – big difference.

And it’s a big site, too. Although camping is restricted to four acres, there are another 20 acres to explore, including woodland and a small stream. It’s a tranquil, picturesque spot, set away from the main road in a green, wooded vale. You might catch the occasional glimpse of an oast house amid the trees – these distinctive buildings serve as a reminder of the hop-farming heritage of the area.

Bedgebury itself was a hop farm in times gone by, but now the rows of old hop-drying huts have found another use as perfectly proportioned cycle storage sheds. Bring your bike to explore the exhilarating single-track trails at Bedgebury Forest, or the more sedate, family ambles around nearby Bewl Water.

Cool factor:
Spacious, chilled-out camping loveliness.
Who's in?:

Tents, dogs – yes. Campervans, caravans – no. Well-behaved groups – yes (separate field for large groups).

Onsite fun:

The main, L-shaped camping field is largely flat. Atmospheric communal tipi open 24/7; tea and cakes served in the afternoon. Eight compost toilets; clean showers and WCs in a portaloo cabin; and washing-up sinks next to the bike-storage huts. Maps detailing local footpaths at reception. Campfires allowed; starter pack including 2 hay bales, logs, matches, kindling, and marshmallows £20.

Offsite fun:

Fantastic area for walking and cycling, including Bewl Water and Bedgebury Forest. Sissinghurst Castle (01580 710701) with its remarkable gardens isn’t far.

Food & drink:

The stylish Globe & Rainbow (01892 890803) at Kilndown serves excellent seasonal food sourced largely from Kentish farms – a 45-minute walk.

The damage:

Adult/child (3 to 14 years) £8–£12/£4–£6 per night (depending on day). Vehicles £5 for stay. Pets £2.

Totally agree with the previous review.  The campsite is spacious and you have plenty of space to set up camp so its your own fault if manage to get on a slope.  The owners are very friendly, helpful and hardworking.  The compost toilets are very well maintained and are odour free.  My husband appreciated the "potty totty" (from afar) - they worked hard making them clean.  The kids (4&3) enjoyed the freedom, space & fantastic sunsets.  Although we didn't partake of the laid on entertainment in the teepee, we loved hearing it in the background.  The owners thoughtfully made sure the loud stuff was over by about 9pm.

Campfire kit was excellent idea - the bales of hay and the wheel hubs fire circles - brilliant.  Bedgebury forest is right on the doorstep providing excellent entertainment for the kids, and lots of excercise from the cycle tracks for us.

Such a shame its not open for longer!

This is how camping should be - one of the few sites which allow you to light campfires and pitch pretty much wherever you like.  The site consists of several fields, some alongside a stream and/or woodland over several acres allowing you to camp alongside others or in privacy - you can even camp in the woods if you want.

There are basic but clean facilities with hot water and showers, and even a room with a bath for the kids.  A small shop sells the basics including firewood and kindling.  All the fields are equipped with eco loos which aren't as bad as they sound and the site is well maintained.  A large teepee offers entertainment on Saturday nights and they offer bushcraft courses including fire lighting for both children and adults at very reasonable prices - my boys thoroughly enjoyed building shelters and foraging with the very knowledgable Phil.

The site is only a couple of minutes drive from Bedgebury Pinetum and Bedgebury Forest which offers excellent biking facilities and a well-equipped bike hire shop.

The sole downside is that the campsite only operates over August, because I'd love to visit again!!!

The staff are friendly and helpful - and the Bedgebury Camping Girls are VERY easy on the eye ;)

Getting there

Take the A21 towards Hastings. After Blue Boys services turn left at the next roundabout on to the A262. Turn right at Goudhurst village pond, follow the road down into the valley, then look for Bedgebury on the right.
