Belle Tents Camping

Camelford, Cornwall, England
1 acre hosted by Laura A.
Large enough for everyone to have their own space, but small enough never to worry about the kids

Poet John Betjeman, synonymous with all things truly ‘English’ earmarked Cornwall as his favourite place in the entire country and he wrote about it a great deal. He’s buried at the church at St Enodoc – for all those campers who wish to pay him homage. So because Cornwall is truly Betjeman-country, it’s completely appropriate that you can camp in a bell tent, reading to your children from A Ring of Bells (for younger readers), to the distant sound of the bells of St Endellion church. It really is a beautifully beguiling thought.

Belle Tents is a great place for wildlife-spotting, so the budding naturalists in the family can have a field day, particularly in the evenings, when butterflies and moths fl it around the wild garden. But however you choose to fill your time during your stay, there’s something theatrical about being here. The tents are set up like a medieval encampment, reminding all of times gone by. Hippies at heart, site owners Laura and Dave make these wonderful tents themselves. Their studio is just beside this sunny, southwesterly- facing site, which is also home to rare-breed cattle and ponies grazing in the fields alongside. A stunning setting that might just inspire you to write some poetry of your own.

Relax and unwind in our beautiful, fully furnished Belle Tents here in North Cornwall on our small private site with campfire, barbeque area and chill-out tent. Belle Tents Camping is not just a tent in a field, this is a very special place with unique facilities. Your stay will be in a whole 'camp' consisting of two bedroom tents and your very own, fully equipped kitchen tent. The camp is sited in it's own garden area with shrubs and flowers, so a bit like a holiday cottage - only without the cottage. If you are a group of family or friends you could hire the whole site exclusively for yourselves. It's also a great place for your stag or hen party.
Nearby attractions

The sandy delights of the north coast are 5 miles away; Tintagel Castle (01840 770328) and beach is great for a day out. Polzeath beach (01208 862003) is particularly good for surfing, with several different surf schools jostling for space beside ice-cream shops. You can go seal-watching at the Rumps, and dolphins are sometimes seen off New Polzeath. Hire a boat at Bude and row up the canal, which will seem wonderfully quiet after the hoards on the coast. Walk along the river for a picnic, starting in the middle of Camelford, where there’s a park with swings.

Food and drink
Each camp has its own garden with edible plants and herbs, and the communal fire often means campers cook together. There’s a Co-op, fish-and-chip shop and Chinese take-away in Camelford, and the Masons Arms (01840 213309) does great food, especially local sea bass and mussels. There’s also a first-rate fruit-and-veg shop called A1 Fruiterers. The Rising Sun (01566 86636), near Altarnun, has excellent food. There’s a good fish shop at Widemouth for mackerel for the barbie.
