Idyllic south Devon has long been one of Britain’s most treasured holiday
destinations. And with a smorgasbord of natural wonders, from the patchwork of
rolling hills that sweep the countryside, to the white sand beaches of its breathtaking
coast, you don’t need to be eagle-eyed to spot why visitors keep coming back. Set
amongst 10 acres of lush woodland, and less than 3 miles from that stunning coastline, Whitehill Country Park is a family-run, family-friendly campsite
with something to offer everyone.
On
driving through the entrance, Whitehill looks picturesque indeed with its
barn style buildings containing the communal facilities. On the subject of facilities,
this has to be one of Devon’s best-equipped campsites. Further to the bar,
shop, reception and games room, Whitehill also has an outdoor heated pool and
children’s pool – perfect for those wanting to soak up some summer sunshine. Tents,
caravans and tourers are all welcomed here, whilst the camping pods (sleeping
up to two adults and two small children), offer an easy alternative to the canvas tent.
All you need to bring is your camping gear (minus the tent) as the pods come kitted
out with mattresses.
If
you thought the British seaside holiday was dead, think again. The
stretch of coastline between Torquay and Brixham (collectively known as
the English Riviera) has its time-honoured charms, especially if you’ve got a
soft spot for deckchairs and fish and chips. Torquay, where Victorian mansions
and hotels are stacked up above the bay, is undoubtedly king of the coastline.
Just to the west lies Paignton (a 10 minute drive from Whitehill), a picture postcard
of a seaside resort, complete with multicoloured beach-huts, promenade and 19th-century
pier.
But let's not beat around the tent pegs here – Whitehill has a distinct ‘holiday park’ vibe that may put off visitors who like their camping a touch more ‘old school’. But despite sharing the site with tourers and caravans, traditional campers should have no problems finding a secluded spot, somewhere amongst 10 acres of woodland. In any case, most people that pitch up at Whitehill are far too busy falling under the spell of south Devon’s natural wonders to care.
