We say

You know you have a winning campsite, when you're sitting pretty, neighbouring one of England's most iconic landmarks. Toweringly beautful and enormously overwhelming, the Stonehenge monument is a definite stellar reason to come to this neck of English woods.

The other reason is the site itself – a camping hub for travellers, hippies, families and couples, all looking for a peaceful place to rest their heads. And rest your head you shall, after you embark on many of the stunning nearby walks through the surrounding idyllic, rural Wiltshire landscape.

At night time, the stars come out and evoke your hidden sentiments as they glisten directly above your campfire. You'll quickly learn that Stonehenge campsite is the place for swapping stories with other campers whilst sipping a hot chocolate at the communal fire pit till the sun rises.

Stonehenge Campsite

We stayed in the Fox Pod in mid-October 2012.  I can highly recommend. It was lovely to just turn up and put our stuff in the pod.  The bed was comfy and there is a little kettle which was a nice surprise.  The heaters were plenty to keep it warm.  Having the BBQ pit was a great addition too for a nice chilled evening.  The local pub is within stumbling distance.  We also did a day out to Longleat Safari Park which is also recommended.

The facilities were fine for the weekend when there were no campers and one or two caravans.  However, on a busy week in summer there may not be enough showers or toilets to avoid big queues at the usual busy times of day.

This site has the potential to be really good, but unfortunately at the moment its more like a festival site than a camp site. The facilities are poor, Portaloo’s and the couple of showers that were flooding and dirty (during our visit). The field we camped in is obviously used for sheep, due to the amount of mess and was uncut, which would have been fine other than the fact that it allowed un-respectful dog owners to not see the mess their pets where leaving for unsuspecting kids! There are plans to add a purpose built toilet and shower block, which will significantly aid this site and the staff where very friendly, but unfortunately we won’t be going back.

July stay

Lovely Wiltshire countryside, only marred by rather poorly maintained facilities- I thought w.c.s and showers could have been cleaned more often, and there were definitely not enough for the number of campers. Having said that, we spent a lot of time going offsite to visit Salisbury, Stonehenge, Longleat, which are easy to reach and well worth the trip. The proprietor and staff were friendly, and the log fires were charming, although we would rather not have to chop it ourselves after paying£10 extra for logs.

Stonehenge Campsite

Really nice little campsite, nice atmosphere, but like a chilled out family festival. Has firepits to hire or you can bring raised firebowls as long as won’t burn the grass. We stayed 2 nights in the bell tent over this busy bank holiday and thought it lovely. Eggs and papers for sale is a nice touch, lots of good info on what to do in a bit of the world we’d never really thought of visiting. Two good pubs in walking distance and very dog friendly (for friendly dogs!) sealed it for us. Facilities basic but clean & fine. Good dish washing room - and the kettle there meant didn’t need to fire up the stove for early morning tea! We’ll be back :)

Stonehenge Campsite

Stayed for 2 weeks and loved the tranquil atmosphere of the area. It has been given a David Bellamy award for it’s eco friendly approach and you can tell with lots of hedges and plants that have been planted to make the place look like you are staying within a nice little corner of nature. It’s also in a lovely part of the country with great views, and nearby public footpaths with some nice walks leading of course to Stonehenge (great walk) and also to some local pubs that have good beer and home cooked food. Facilities are fine, just what you need, and an excellent deal including electricity and water, all you need. The owner William is very friendly and helpful when you need it. Definitely be back again!

Stonehenge Campsite

An eco friendly, fresh, new site! Lots of space for our motorhome and a great pitch for our camping family. William, the site owner, was extremely helpful and friendly, with local info, advice and good ideas for us tourists.

A stones throw from The Henge, the campsite is in a great countryside location with several local villages and great pubs in easy walking distance, we enjoyed both...the walks and the pubs!

The site has good basic facilities for cooking and washing up, toilets and a shower block, which we were told is to be improved imminently.

William is aiming for the David Bellamy Conservation Award and has set inplace more than the minimal recycling requirements, new native hedgerow throughout the site with a wild area to encourage wildlife.

We will return!!!

Location

Getting There

From Stonehenge, head west on the A303 for 3 miles. Take 1st left in Winterbourne Stoke onto the B3083 and head south for half a mile. The site is on your left.

Public Transport

Salisbury is the closest train station and from there you can either catch the No 2 bus or get a cab to the site.

The Damage

For 1 tent, 2 people and 1 car - £9-15 depending on season.

The Downside

You get a bit of noise from the A303 if the wind is from North West.

On Site

Campfires (in designated pits) & barbecues allowed. The site has 35 mixed pitches in total and 12 electric hook ups for tents and caravans. There are 2 tent fields: the 2 acre campfire field and the 1 acre meadow/family Field. Both fields belong to a 9 acre small holding, where you will find horses, Jacob sheep, (lambs in the summer) and chickens. There are no set number of pitches per field, however both are suitably spacious. The campfire field has 9 electric hook ups, 2 water points and extra porter loos. There is one heated shower and toilet block comprising of 2 showers, 3 sinks and 6 toilets. Plans for a new eco-friendly shower block are underway for 2012. Warning: The site can get extrememly busy (over 100 tent pitches) during the Summer Solstice Festival (17th-23rd June 2012).

Off Site

Being one of England's premier tourist attractions, Stonehenge is a definite must. The prehistoric monument also manages to attract tens of thousands of people every year for the Summer Solstice Festival. Lots of soul searching with thousands of peaceful sunworshippers as you all watch the sun rise on the longest day of the year. Something the kids will never stop talking about is Longleat House Safari Park (01985 844400). Home to an African array of stunning wildlife, including lions, cheetas, wilderbeests, elephants and of course the infamously cheeky Longleat monkeys. Warning: keep your windows shut when the monekys are about, as they have been known to dabble in the art of the five-finger-discount.

If it rains

Dance like a crazy person amongst the Stonehenge rocks. Or you could (more sensibly) take refuge in the stunning Salisbury Cathedral.

Open

Open all year.

Food

Fresh morning eggs are sold onsite, however, the Berwick Farm Shop sells practically everything the camper could ever need. And we weren't joking when we said the location of this site is perfect , you've got 8 (yes 8) stellar nearby pubs to choose from. Top picks are the Boot Inn at Berwich St James (01722 790243) and the Bell Inn at Winterbourne Stoke (01980 620445).

Cool

Well, Stonehenge on your doorstep is a definite bonus, but also the peaceful community feel to the entire site.
