Cool Camping campsite review:

There’s an old saying at Mandinam: ‘If you’re not bothered, then I don’t give a damn.’ You could be forgiven for thinking that Marcus, the owner, is somewhat apathetic, however, his Mandinam motto simply means as long as his guests don’t have a worry, then neither does he. And so the fun begins, as you’re given free reign to do whatever you want within these 450 acres of indefectibly idyllic Welsh farmland, in the middle of nowhere.

Marcus makes for an interesting and engaging host, happy to chat about anything from the woes of today’s farming industry to the animals he tends on his land. And you’ll soon notice that he has put just as much care and attention into his shepherd’s hut and gypsy caravan as he has the entire farm.

If it’s privacy you’re after, then either of these wooden huts offers it in droves, as well as a view destined to hurt your eyes if you stare at it too much: gaping-wide, echoingly open rolling hills – hills for days on end. It really is the place to lose one’s inhibitions and get stuck into some unadulterated chilling.

Once you snap out of your scenic trance, step inside your chosen abode and prepare to coo at how dainty and cosy it is. Beautifully furnished, every inch of both huts exudes the love that has been put into them, from the mini kitchenette with butler sink to the traditional wood-burning stove. Equipped with everything that the camper’s heart could desire, they even come complete with fresh lavender to aid a peaceful night’s slumber. The only things you’ll need to concern yourself with is when to light the BBQ and what time to climb into the hot tub, which sits adjacent to the gypsy caravan. Yes, a hot tub – on a hill – with an impressive sea of stunning farmland for a view, and the jealous stars as an audience.

Welsh legend has it that ‘Mandinam’ means ‘a place without blemish’ or ‘untouched holy place’, and after one night’s stay here, you’ll see how fitting these descriptions are for this glamping destination. As certain as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, you will be booking your next stay at this isolated rural retreat before you even start packing up to go home.

Cool factor:
Hot tub, stars, and the self with a Breconian backdrop.
Who's in?:

Families, groups (by arrangement), additional tents – yes. Dogs, caravans, motorhomes – no.

Onsite fun:

Campfires and BBQs allowed. One gypsy caravan, one shepherd’s hut. Both come with kitchenettes, a twin gas-stove, a wood-burner, double bed with luxurious bedding, kitchenware, BBQ, and separate en suite bathroom. Gas-powered shower in the gypsy caravan, log-burning shower in the shepherd’s hut. The latter also has a separate compost toilet. Both have solar-powered lighting, outdoor seating areas, and the gypsy hut comes with it’s own outdoor hot tub. You can charge mobiles and batteries in Marcus’ home.

Offsite fun:

The 450 acres of Mandinam provide plenty of walking, birdwatching, fishing, and bat-spotting opportunities. However, if you venture 12 miles further you’ll find the National Botanic Garden of Wales (01558 668768) and a selection of Welsh castles, including Carreg Cennen.

Food & drink:

For decent pub grub, the Red Lion (01550 777357) ticks all the right boxes and is only a short walk into Llangadog village. For some real Carmarthenshire finesse, book a table at Y Polyn (01267 290000) in Capel Dewi.

The damage:

Both huts are £70 per night; self-catering. Minimum stay is 2 nights.

Open:

All year.

We wanted a relaxing, completely secluded break before our wedding in a few weeks and this seemed like the perfect place; it was.

Marcus and Danielle are the most wonderful hosts, kind, interesting, helpful and very happy to leave you alone or talk to you, depending on your needs. The caravan itself is just amazing, it is nestled behind a hill (which, if you walk up has the most beautiful 360 degree views) and you are not disturbed by anyone or anything. It is cute and very practical and has everything you need including cutlery, pans, cloths, washing up liquid etc so no need to overpack like we did! The bed is super comfortable and lovely and warm. The hot tub is wonderful after a day walking in the Brecon countryside.

As the main review says you can 'get lost' on the huge farm, which has hills, woodland, water and lots of animals.

When you go, don't miss going to see the waterfalls, the biggest one you can even walk behind. Just pop down to the next village - Llandavery and ask in the tourist office, they will give you a map for 30p and show you how to get there. Whilst in Llandavery eat at the castle hotel, beautiful or just have one of their home made scotch eggs!

We can't recommend the hut enough (we stayed in the gypsy caravan and didn't even know where the other hut was until we asked on the last day). Just magnificent!

Getting there

You can either take the M4 and A483, or the more scenic A40, to Ashfield. Then take the A4069 into Llangadog, take a left on to High Street and then a slight right on to Pen-y-graig Road. After taking a right-hand turn and the next left-hand turn, you’ll find Mandinam’s drive.

Public transport:

Catch a train to Swansea then change on to the scenic Heart of Wales line to Llangadog. You can then either take a taxi or Marcus will collect you if pre-arranged.
