Eric’s only worry is how fast the grass grows. Want to know how that feels?

Cool Camping campsite review:

A recent British Household Panel Survey studied a random selection of British citizens to locate the happiest place in the land. The result? Powys, Wales. All that good, clean country living scored highly over cities, whose overcrowded streets and pack-em-in residential blocks were no contest for a county full of sheep and fields. When you meet the proprietor of Strawberry Skys (sic), Eric, the survey rings true; he comes across as someone who jumps into his wellies each morning eager to add the finishing touches to his new glamping paradise which opened in 2008.

The site is a steep, narrow field facing hills in all directions. Sloping down to a valley floor, the only visible building is a hilltop farmhouse on the horizon. You've just the sheep for company and their job is to graze. Eric's only bone of contention since moving to happy Powys is how fast the grass grows; the sheep help keep the blades short. Situated at the top, middle and bottom of the slope are three Mongolian yurts (two 16-foot two-person, one 19-foot four-person). Also at the foot of the hill is a fabulous all-mod-cons kitchen outbuilding with a veranda, compost loo hut and hot-shower unit. All of them pretty, clean and new!

Each yurt has been brightly painted in greens and oranges, while solar-powered fairy lights and natural coconut matting join rugs and cushion from India. Woodburners keep guests toasty during winter months; Eric brings wood around each evening. Fire pits are flanked by gorgeous chunky wooden tables and benches, and each yurt has its own BBQ. Sitting out all night chewing the fat and chomping on hot dogs under paraffin lamps doesn't get much more stylish than this.

Geographically the location is a winner. Despite being just miles inland from the English border, the site is burrowed deep enough into Wales' bosom to hear the country's provincial, traditional heartbeat. Yet because it's within reach of motorways, escaping from most major cities is a breeze. In high season, Eric runs bookings Friday to Monday and Monday to Friday (or both) so no excuse to avoid grabbing a long weekend after a harrowing week in the office.

Convenient, cool and waterproof, Strawberry Skys' yurts will be a big hit and bookings are sure to come flooding in. Take it from us; guests could not fail to leave this camp feeling rested, revived and, yes, perfectly happy with life, too

The upside:
A taste of Wales on the skirts of the England/Wales border; one you can dip into and enjoy all year round.
The downside:
This might be a new site, but there are only three yurts, so be quick to bagsy high-season bookings. Cyclists should be aware the lanes are narrow and therefore dangerous.
The facilities:

Two compost loos (one for each movement!), modern kitchen outbuilding, a shower block and, from 2010, a nice terraced picnic area.

Nearest decent pub:

Black Lion, The Goat, Red Lion. Just 3 Drops is a wine bar, all in Llanfair Caereinion. About a mile and a half away. 2-3 mins in a car, or 30-40 min walk across the fields on public footpath. The Goat and Red Lion serve food every day and the Black Lion at weekends. Locals are very friendly, especially in the Black Lion where tired guests can frequently get a lift back to the site if they ask nicely.

The Lion Hotel in Berriew does an excellent Sunday Lunch and evening meals.

Strawberry Skys is set in the beautiful rolling hills of Mid-Wales on our own 10 acre smallholding which we purchased three years ago with the specific intention of setting up a yurt campsite. With an outlook across the Cambrian and Berwyn mountains Strawberry Skys is secluded, yet easily accesible, making it the perfect spot to relax and get away from it all or to use as a base for exploring all the sites and activities that Mid & North Wales have to offer.

We are a small, low-impact site with only three yurts and no plans for more, so you will never feel rushed, or crowded. Our traditional Mongolian yurts are set apart from the other in a gently sloping field set with Willow, Cherry and Ash trees. The yurts are built on raised wooden platfroms, felt lined and heated by a woodburner so they are amazingly warm all year round.

Whatever you choose to do during your stay you can end the day stargazing by your own log fire or simply enjoying the relaxing warmth of the yurts for the perfect wind-down.

Whether you are looking for a relaxing get away or the chance to simply spend a few days in the great outdoors without the hassle or discomfort of regular camping then we believe Strawberry Skys is the ideal place.
