Camping car areas - France and Spain

Just a note about camper vans in France and Spain:

In France, many towns have 'Camping Car' areas where you can stay for free, get water and even empty your tanks (if you have them!). Look out for camping car signs, and there is actually a book listing them all available in France (though I can't remember its name I'm afraid).

A good example is in Ondres Plage on the West coast of France - right on the beach (in fact, completely surrounded by dunes!):

In Spain these are fewer and far between. A notable exception for travellers taking the ferry to Northern Spain is Santoña where you can park up near the harbour, though it doesn't have the facilities mentioned.

It is illegal to camp in car parks/lay-bys in Spain, though whether anyone will do anything probably depends on how far from a campsite you are. However, the definition of camping does not prohibit parking up and sleeping in your camper. What you can't do is have awnings/tables/chairs etc out.

I hope this is useful - we missed out on some camping opportunities through not knowing the rules so hope it helps someone else!

There are one or two books

There are one or two books out there which list the Aires de Service, but I think the most comprehensive one is probably the Guide Officiel des Aires de Services; this one:

You can get it in bookshops, and sometimes in the larger newsagents.

There is also an organisation called France Passion which is well worth knowing about if you take a lot of holidays in France. You can join even if you live outside France, and for your annual subscription (I think 25 Euros) you get a book of addresses and a window sticker which allows the camper van to stay for free for up to 24 hours at a time on vineyards, farms etc. all over France. They normally have space for only 3 or 4 vans and it is "first come, first served", i.e. you cannot book ahead.

You are supposed to be self-sufficient for water, WC etc, but some of the owners provide basic facilities anyway. If they produce foodstuffs for sale it is courteous to buy something, but not obligatory. You may even get a tour of the farm if they are not too busy.
