A perfect place to relax and unwind, away from the camera-wielding crowd

The word is finally out – the sights and attractions of Tenerife go way beyond beaches, bars and British breakfasts. The largest and best-known Canary Island (with around 5 million visitors a year) has a surprising array of experiences waiting to be discovered; from tropical-forest walks, picturesque fishing villages and dark forays into volcanic lava. Most holidaymakers head to south-western resorts like Playa de las Americas, however nestled on the islands untouched and largely forgotten east coast is Elska Organics, a perfect place to relax and unwind, away from the sight of camera-wielding coach loads.

Elska Organics is certainly off the beaten track. Set amongst a wild organic land with over 150 fruit trees and olive groves, a trip to this part of Tenerife feels like a voyage into the middle of nowhere. Three caves, a renovated ‘Casita’ (cottage) and one lovingly furnished yurt with bedding, cushions and plenty of storage space complete the accommodation set-up. The cosy Casita has been handily fitted with its very own living room, kitchen and bathroom, whilst the caves and yurt share a communal kitchen, three communal eating areas and two bathrooms. Facilities don’t end there – you'll also find a sauna and chemical-free swimming pool, surrounded by vegetable patches, a large pond and epic views all the way to the Atlantic.

No visit to Tenerife is complete without a trip to the coast, but if manicured beaches with perfectly aligned rows of sun beds leave you cold, don’t worry, there are plenty of untouched alternatives only a flip-flop away. Whether you’re seeking a spot of surfing, bodyboarding or a day discovering secluded coves, Tenerife’s diverse east coast has you covered. The whole island is covered with great hiking trails too, including Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain towering 12,198 ft. The path is well within the capacity of any British hill-walker, but many recommend hitting the trail before dawn to avoid the blazing low sun. This early approach gives the bonus of watching the sunrise over Teide National Park, recently named a ‘World Heritage Site’ by UNESCO.

A dry rock favoured by British holidaymakers seeking guaranteed sunshine and cheap pints of lager is a perception that Tenerife is finally shaking. This populist image represents a minuscule facet of the island's personality and it doesn't take a Christopher Columbus to go and discover the island's true character. But you may just prefer to lie back in your hammock, gaze out over the valley amongst fruit trees and olive groves, congratulating yourself on the inspirational brainwave to visit the idyllic, hidden oasis that is Elska Organics.

Nearby attractions

The closest beach is just a 15 minute drive away, whilst a 25 minute drive takes you to some excellent beaches for surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing and stand-up paddle boarding. Elska Organics is located in an area with fantastic outdoor climbing opportunities and have close links to many climbing clubs and happily help arrange any excursions. The whole island is covered with great hiking trails including Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain with breathtaking volcanic landscapes. The Teide Cable Car (0034 922 010 440) takes just eight minutes to speed you to the top, however infinitely more rewarding is to pull on your hiking boots, pack sunblock and water and devote 5 hours to walking up it. Paragliding and dolphin/whale watching tours are also popular in the south of the island.

Food and drink

The site offers self-catering or B&B and can also prepare picnics or evening meals with a little notice. All produce is fresh and organically grown. Elska Organics is a 20 minute drive from a wine bodega and cheese farm (where incidentally they won ‘Best Cheese In The World’ back in 2008). Tenerife is covered with vineyards and they produce beautiful wine and fabulous goats cheese. The site is fairly remote so the closest restaurants are about a 20-25 minute drive away. The most notable being the restaurants in the nearby fishing village of Tajao, where they serve locally-caught fish of the day along with traditional Canarian tapas.
