Take a trip to Orford Castle (2 miles) and enjoy the fabulous views over Orford Ness. Built between 1165 and 1173 by Henry II to consolidate royal power in Suffolk, the well-preserved keep, described by historian R. Allen Brown as "one of the most remarkable keeps in England", is of a unique design and still stands among the earth-covered remains of the outer fortifications. Snape Maltings, near Aldeburgh (5 miles) is a former barley malting works that now offers a high-class programme of Concert Hall events (particularly during the Aldeburgh Festival.) The sites original purpose was the malting of barley for the brewing of beer. Once malted, this was sent from to London and exported to mainland Europe. Today a collection of shops, galleries, restaurants as well as the lovely Concert Hall fill the old buildings. The Alde Estuary is known for its wildlife and river trips. The nearby coastline and estuaries provide some of the best sailing on the east coast, with many marinas, boat-builder's yards and ancient fishing villages to sail leisurely past. There are plenty of boat trips and boats for hire, including: River Stour Trust (01787 313199), Orwell River Cruises (01473 836680) and MFL Lady Florence (07831 698298.)
