Abbots Reading Farm

Family-friendly fun on a family-friendly farm

The back-to-nature Rusland Valley barely features on most Lake District itineraries – a big plus point as far as visitors to Abbots Reading Farm are concerned. The grassy hill behind the farm might be too steep for tents but it’s perfect for their half-dozen elevated timber “octolodges”, which are less pod and more lozenge when it comes to shape but offer the same camping-without-canvas creature comforts. And comforts there undoubtedly are – power-points, lighting, underfloor heating, even a wall-mounted TV with kids’ channels, plus a spacious wooden deck with sweeping views all the way up to the central lakeland fells. Oh, and we love the built-in wine rack in the little kitchen area. Immaculate showers and loos are sited a very short walk away (or a children’s roll down the hill) where there’s also a huge, open-sided communal barn with picnic tables – great for a game of table footy or somewhere to get the barbecue under cover if it rains. Hand-reared farm animals pootle about, getting in the way of games of rounders on the play area, while the nothing’s-too-much-trouble hosts can point the way to the bird hide and pond when an hour’s quiet reflection beckons.

The outdoor sculptures, and bike and hike trails of Grizedale Forest are 7 miles up the road – and anyone remotely adventurous is going to love Grizedale’s treetop adventure course, Go Ape (www.goape.co.uk). Or drive a couple of minutes round to Haverthwaite station for a car-free day out on the steam railway up to Lakeside (015395 31594), where you can jump on a cruise to Windermere and Ambleside (015394 43360).

Food and drink

There are three pubs within a 25-minute walk (or 5min drive), with The White Hart at Bouth (01229 861229) the best place for locally sourced food and real ales – there’s a children’s playground opposite too. The Café in the Forest at Grizedale (01229 860445) is good for lunch, and has a takeaway ice cream counter.
