Thebasic nature of the site gives you great holiday bragging rights

You can keep your campsite shops, TV rooms, elaborate wooden shelters and other nannying aspects of many UK campsites. These sort of well-equipped spots have their place, of course, but sometimes what the cool camper craves is somewhere a little more raw. A place where you pitch up, set up and enjoy a no-frills natural trip. If you feel suitably intrepid, then Pure Camping is your kind of place.

Caravans and motor homes are kept to the top field, meaning those seeking shelter under nylon have their own little slice of traditional-style paradise to themselves. Set among the trees and hedges of a flat farmer’s field, it’s a friendly place – arguably down to the fact that like-minded campers are sharing the space – with basic showers, toilets, a kettle and honesty pot for those looking to buy the preserves on display being the only trappings of the modern world.

There are ample walking opportunities on the farmer’s land itself, but those who want to strike out a little further could spot the wild deer who also call the south west coastal paths their home.

Beautiful, natural and authentic – this is camping as it used to be.

Nearby attractions

Cyclists should check out the nearby Tarka Trail, which offers over 30 miles of scenic cycling between Braunton and Meeth, using the old railways of North Devon as stopping points. The beautiful beaches of Woolacombe, Putsborough, Croyde and Saunton Beach and Braunton Burrows are within five miles of the site. Our tip is to head for Barricane Beach which, through the summer months, has a fabulous Sri Lankan curry shack pitched up the edge of the sand. Its queues are testament to the quality.

Food and drink

The local villages of Georgeham, Knowle, Braunton and Croyde all offer great restaurants and pubs. Standouts include the Georgeham’s Rock Inn (01271 890322), a 17th century tavern renowned for its extensive real ale list and excellent Sunday roasts. Since you’re near the sea, it would be near-criminal not to try fish and chips. You’ll find the best at the award-winning Squires (01271 815533), an upmarket (but reasonably priced) restaurant and takeaway in nearby Braunton.
