Luxury yurt camping on the magical Lizard Peninsula. A campfire for lingering summer evenings and a log-burner for chillier nights.

For a slight and magical peninsula, the Lizard packs in scores of holiday parks. At first glance there seems little in between these caravan cities and a handful of basic camping fields. Thankfully Cornish Yurts bucks the trend with a little more class – and a solution for all the weathers that whip across this sea-ravaged landscape.

Arrive to scones, jam and a copy of the local rag and you immediately feel you’ve been given the nod to relax and sink onto one of the futons. In such a cosy abode, decked out in furry throws, antique-style furniture, and with a log-burning stove, it’s difficult not to kick back and make yourself at home. Each yurt even has its own shower room and loo – no, it’s not en suite, but this is supposed to be camping after all.

The yurts being based on a working farm, you can don your wellies and take a tour. Or even better, let the farmer’s daughters whisk the kids off to see the calves being milked, while you book in for a reflexology treatment in the farmhouse. You may not have chosen an organic beef and dairy farm expecting romance, but by night, huddled by the campfire or log-burner, with the candles lit and stars glinting through the roof panel, even with the kids in tow there’s an unmistakable note of romance in the air.

Nearby attractions

You’re on the Lizard, so there are all sorts of brilliant things to do nearby, from meeting the camels at Roscuick Organic Farm (01326 231119) to a futuristic Segway tour around Goonhilly Earth Station (08443 814044). There’s a string of secluded bays and pearly beaches within easy reach, two of the closest being Kennack Sands and Coverack – at the latter there is an excellent windsurfing and kayaking outfit (01326 280939). When you’re so close to the seaside it’s only fair that ice cream should feature heavily in your diet; fortunately Roskilly’s Farm (01326 280479) is only minutes away, where you can watch the creamy cold stuff being made and meet the cows it comes from.

Food and drink

Roskilly’s Farm isn’t only home to some of Cornwall’s most famous ice cream, you can also tuck into homemade local fare at the family-friendly Croust House Restaurant. Stock up on farm produce, pies and organic meats from Roscuick Organic Farm Shop (see Offsite Fun) or treat yourself to a fresh fish dinner with a sea view at the Lifeboat House; in Coverack (01326 281212).
