Moreton (Ready Camp)

Dorchester, Dorset, England
1 acre hosted by Ready C.
Prime location for the sights of East Dorset – most of them owned by the National Trust
This large campsite, located in the sleepy village of Moreton, just a few miles outside Dorchester in the heart of the Dorset countryside, is an ideal base for exploring the best of the county’s sights – you could easily spend a fortnight here and not see everything.

The place itself has got great facilities, including two washing and shower blocks, a children's play area and an area for ball games – plus there's an excellent pub next door, the Frampton Arms. The highlight, though, is the three Ready Camp safari tents, new to the campsite and kitted out with everything you need: two proper beds in two proper bedrooms (the tents can sleep four adults in comfort, or a family of six), a kitchenette with hob, fridge, microwave and pots, pans and cutlery; and a living area that extends to a shady terrace.

It’s the location that’s the real draw however. The nearby Jurassic Coast, the seaside resort of Swanage and the coast of the Isle of Purbeck are all on your doorstep, and the nice thing is that the site is just a short walk from Moreton Station so you can ditch the car and take the train to the seaside – to Bournemouth, Poole or Weymouth. With a car there’s also access to Studland Bay or you can tour the Jurassic Coast along as far as Burton Bradstock with its superb beach café.

Dorchester is just a fifteen-minute drive away and is a pleasant market town (and has the added draw of Thomas Hardy's cottage just outside), while there are more literary connections at nearby Clouds Hill, where you can visit the house of 'Lawrence of Arabia', TE Lawrence, and continue on to the military museum at Bovington Camp, where he was stationed. By the time you get back to camp you’ll have done enough to write your very own novel!

Your time spent…where it matters Time away with family & friends is great, but let’s be honest - it can sometimes be hectic to even think about! Ready Camp takes away some of the stresses and hassles of camping - having a pre-erected, canvas-wrapped haven with real beds, a kitchen and dining area. There’s no need to fill the car rammed to the rafters with an endless supply of ‘just in cases’. We give you back the time to do the fun things together with your friends and family. Pack your bedding & a sense of adventure Walk into a comfortable haven with cosy furnishings and oodles of little luxuries.  With two bedrooms, an open plan living/dining area where you can wine and dine to your hearts content or put your feet up on the comfy settee after a long day’s adventure. The Kitchen area includes a fridge, microwave and hob, along with basic cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. (We’ve even supplied the corkscrew!) When it comes to light’s out…we’ve even included a torch for those midnight toilet trips, or just to make funny shadows on the tent!
Nearby attractions
There are a host of literary attractions in the surrounding countryside. Moreton was the home to TE Lawrence (aka 'Lawrence of Arabia') in the early 1900s and it was close to here the famous writer and adventurer died in a motorcycle accident; he is buried in the churchyard of the village church of St Nicholas (not the one by the church but a separate one across the road) and his home at Clouds Hill (01929 405616) is now owned by the National Trust and open to the public. This is also Thomas Hardy country: most of his novels were set in the area around Dorchester ('Casterbridge' in the books) and you can visit the cottage (01305 262366), also owned by the National Trust, where he was born. The National Trust's Studland Bay (01929 450500) is a perfect stretch of sandy beach, while if you go to Bournemouth you will certainly want to visit National-Trust-run Brownsea Island (01202 707744) in Poole Harbour, which famously inspired Enid Blyton to write about the Famous Five. The beach is also lovely at the nearby seaside resort of Swanage, while Kimmeridge Bay is the place to find fossils and go rock-pooling. Also, don't miss the ruins of Corfe Castle, which tower above the village of the same name and are owned by - you guessed it! – the National Trust. Don't forget your membership card!
Food and drink
The most obvious place to get something to eat and drink is right next door to the campsite at the Frampton Arms (01305 852253), a traditional pub that does good food, in particular excellent steaks. There's a tearoom in Moreton village, the Moreton Tearooms (01929 463647), which does light lunches and luscious cream teas. In Dorchester, try Café Jagos (01305 266056), a cafe-restaurant that serves good sandwiches and Mediterranean main courses and has a small courtyard garden. Further afield, we like the Greyhound Inn (01929 480205) in Corfe Castle very much – it does good food and has a great atmosphere – while in the opposite direction, the Hive Beach Café in Burton Bradstock (01308 897070) is one of the best beach cafés for miles around, a place to stop for superb fish and seafood on the Jurassic Coast.
